When people compare "data science certificate" with "data science degree" they are comparing fundamentally different products — different time commitments, different costs, different credential weights and different career use cases. Data science certificates — what they are
IIT and IIM data science certificate programs are 6–12 month programs (weekend online) that award a certificate of completion from the institution. They are not degrees — you cannot use them to apply for PhD programs, and they are not equivalent to a B.Tech or M.Tech for government job grade requirements. They are professional credentials that signal expertise in a specific domain to employers in the private sector.
Certificate programs are right for: working professionals who already hold a degree and want to upskill or pivot; professionals targeting private sector roles where skill and credential matter more than degree type; those who cannot take 1–3 years out of the workforce for a full degree.
Data science degrees — what they are
Full data science degrees include B.Sc./B.Tech in Data Science (3–4 years), M.Sc. in Data Science (2 years), M.Tech in Data Science (2 years) and PhD programs.
