Why visualization is a core data skill
A model nobody understands changes nothing. Data professionals who can show a pattern clearly — to a manager, a client or a regulator — move decisions faster than those who only produce tables. Visualization is design applied to evidence, and it can be practised deliberately.
Seven principles to practise now
- Start with the question. Write the one decision the chart should support before you open any tool
- Match the chart to the comparison. See the table below
- Remove clutter. Delete gridlines, borders and decoration that carry no information
- Label directly and annotate the insight. Put the takeaway in the title, not in a legend hunt
- Use colour with purpose. Reserve a strong colour for what matters and choose colour-blind-safe palettes; never rely on colour alone
- Keep axes honest. Start bar charts at zero and avoid truncated axes that exaggerate differences
- Test on a real audience. Show it to two colleagues and ask what they conclude
Choosing the chart
| Your question | Typical chart | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Compare categories | Bar chart | Bars that do not start at zero |
| Change over time | Line chart | Too many lines or mismatched scales |
| Distribution | Histogram or box plot | Bin width changing the story |
| Relationship between two variables | Scatter plot | Overplotting and implied causation |
| Part of a whole | Stacked bar or simple share chart | Pies with many slices |
| Geographic pattern | Map | Large areas dominating attention |
Where IIT Bombay's design programme fits
The e-Postgraduate Diploma in Interaction Design (ePGD IxD) from the IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay, is a 36-credit diploma for working professionals. Two of its courses speak directly to data work:
| Course | Credits | Mode | Next dates | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Visualization | 6 | Online | 9 Jan – 14 Feb 2027 | Key design techniques and theory, with practice in building and evaluating visualizations |
| Quantitative Research Methods in Design | 6 | Online | 20 Feb – 28 Mar 2027 | Forming hypotheses, identifying variables, collecting and analysing data, applying statistics and designing experiments |
A 6-credit course costs ₹59,000 including GST and is payable within 30 days of the start of sessions. Even online courses require an in-person presentation, exam or assessment at IIT Bombay, so plan a campus visit. The page describes the diploma as 36 credits and does not say whether you can enrol for a single course — ask the programme team if you want only one. Read the full programme guide.
Who can apply
- By degree: design, engineering, architecture, fine arts, applied arts, information architecture, ergonomics or human factors, or writing and communication
- By experience: any other degree plus 3+ years in listed roles such as UX designer, UI designer, web developer, information architect or product manager — analyst roles are not on that list, so check
- By CEED: any other degree plus a qualifying CEED score
An engineering graduate working in analytics qualifies through the degree route, which makes the programme a realistic option for many data professionals.
A 30-day practice plan
| Week | Focus |
|---|---|
| 1 | Recreate three well-designed published charts from scratch |
| 2 | Redesign one poor dashboard you use at work and write what you changed and why |
| 3 | Build a dashboard around a single stakeholder question |
| 4 | Write the story, test it with two colleagues, and add it to your portfolio |
Turn the result into portfolio evidence with our portfolio projects guide. For tool skills, see Power BI and analytics careers and Python for data science. If your goal is a quick tool skill, tool-specific training is more direct; a design-school course adds principles and research method.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does IIT Bombay offer a data visualization course?
Yes. The ePGD in Interaction Design includes Data Visualization, a 6-credit online course starting 9 January 2027, covering key design techniques and theory with practice in building and evaluating visualizations.
Can I take just the data visualization course?
The programme page describes a 36-credit diploma and does not say whether single-course enrolment is available. Ask the programme team.
What does the course cost?
₹59,000 including GST for a 6-credit course, payable within 30 days of the start of sessions.
Is the course fully online?
Teaching is online, but the page states that even online courses require an in-person presentation, exam or assessment at IIT Bombay.
Are data analysts eligible?
By degree if your undergraduate degree is in engineering, design or another listed discipline. By experience, the listed roles do not include analyst titles, so confirm with the programme team.
